Culture & Diplomacy: EUNIC Conference

Culture & Diplomacy: EUNIC Conference

Culture Plus is a series of events aiming to explore ways in which culture contributes to wider agendas. Culture Plus events feature speakers from different European countries, and therefore ensure that ideas, experience and opinions from across Europe are taken into account. Events contain a mix of presentations and open discussions.

Each event will agree on a set of remarks and recommendations, which will be published by EUNIC - European Union National Institutes for Culture, and shared with leaders and influencers across Europe. Culture Plus is organised by EUNIC cluster in the Czech Republic in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

The cycle of events Culture Plus aims to promote the presentation of a wide range of views over the importance of culture in several fields. By organizing a series of presentations and discussions covering the relation between culture and other subjects (e.g. Culture and Diplomacy; Culture and Economics; Culture and Media) we expect to raise the consciousness of the importance of cultural dynamics in several fields of today’s life.

Culture & Diplomacy – Round 1
The first part of the series is dedicated to the relationship between culture and diplomacy and examines the potential of culture to influence development of relations between Europe and the rest of the world. The support of a greater understanding for the European way of life, drawing attention to its foundational values of democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms is what first comes to mind. Taking one step further, the conference also elaborates upon how to apply this potential of culture in the most effective way.

Roots of common cultural foundations of Europe date back to language, law and art of Greek and Roman Empires, Christian/Jewish tradition, Humanism, and Enlightenment. Their rather strong manifestations in every-day life all across Europe lie behind what can be described as common European culture.

The European Union framework can be an important tool for increasing the capacity of individual European countries to gain attention of audiences of countries like China or India and to communicate effectively with them. On the level of the European Union as such, EU initiatives and projects (such as the European Year), the foundational values and even reflections of the common cultural platform and heritage seem to be the natural areas of involvement. EUNIC and its clusters all over the world can go even further. While following the foundational motto of the European Union “United in diversity”, EUNIC can give voice to national specificities, highlighting them and sharing them within the European context.
