European Day of Languages 2015 in Czech Republic

The aim of the European Day of Languages is to celebrate multilingualism in Europe and to encourage the language learning process. Multiple events are organised across Europe to promote the importance of language learning, to raise awareness and to gain appreciation of all the languages spoken in Europe. Mastering foreign languages does not only help us to understand each other better, but to overcome our cultural differences as well.

This year EUNIC Czech Republic has shown its dedication to the language field on two occasions: 1. An online quiz consisting of 17 questions about the various European languages, completed by more than a thousand participants. 2. Speak-dating: a quick, unusual and fun way to practice language skills or to try a new foreign language. The event was organized by the European cultural institutes, affiliated to EUNIC, in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic and the Institute of Language and Preparatory Studies of the Charles University. It took place on 24th September in the afternoon in the passage of the Lucerna Palace in Prague. The event received the kind support of Lucerna Barrandov, s.r.o. During the Speak-dating everyone could sit for five to ten minutes with teachers of a foreign language and have a short “lesson” with them. The choice was among twenty languages: Bulgarian, Danish, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Vietnamese and Czech for foreigners. Approximately hundred people tried at least three different languages.

Furthermore, following the drawing competition „Picture dictionary”, organized for pupils from various Czech primary schools in 2014, an exhibition was created and it will be displayed in the cultural institutes in the course of next year.
